Electromagnets

An electromagnet is a type of magnet that gets its magnetism from an electric current. It can be turned on and off.

You can increase the strength of an electromagnet by adding more coils of wire around the core.

A magnetic field is the area in which a magnet exerts magnetic force.

A compass always points to the strongest magnetic field around.

True

Common materials include iron, steel, or other ferromagnetic materials.

Reversing the current will reverse the poles of the electromagnet.

The battery provides the electric current needed to create the magnetic field.

Yes, an electromagnet can lose its magnetism when the electric current is turned off.

A permanent magnet maintains its magnetism without an electric current, while an electromagnet requires current to generate magnetism.
