The early idea about inheritance was that the traits of two parents mixed in the offspring, like mixing two colors of paint.

Mendel's basic premise was that each genetic trait was controlled by a pair of particles or "Factors" (What we would now call genes)

His studies led him to develop three basic lawas of heredity

Mendel never actually saw his factors. He predicted them mathematically.

When two different alleles are present together, one (the dominant) will be expressed while the other (the recessive) will remain hidden. A key idea is that while the recessive was not expressed, it maintained its identity and could still be passed on.
