African American men couldn’t fight until the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. White men enlisted or were drafted. Families were divided over the war.

Many African Americans and poor whites were stuck in agricultural jobs because they didn’t have experience in other areas. Violence broke out throughout the United States because African Americans gained their freedom and had economic and political opportunities. Amendments were passed to grant rights and protections for African Americans.

Westward expansion greatly impacted slavery because it brought the practice into question.  The federal government had to decide whether new territories and states should continue the practice.  Southern representatives fought to continue slavery and northern representatives wanted to abolish it.  Led to domestic conflict throughout the US
