The Radical Republicans in Congress, who disapproved of President Andrew Johnson's lax Reconstruction plan, started the era after the Civil War known as Radical Reconstruction. It was distinguished by the military takeover of the South, the disenfranchisement of former Confederate leaders, and the empowerment of African Americans through the granting of citizenship and the right to vote. By ratifying the 14th and 15th Amendments and passing several Reconstruction Acts, the Radicals put these reforms into effect.
