FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What are some examples of commonly used modern materials?

Back

Concrete, aluminium, and steel are commonly used modern materials.

3.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What is graphene?

Back

Graphene is a single carbon layer material, hypothetically 100 times stronger than steel. It is almost weightless, potentially bulletproof, and invisible, but it has not been manufactured in large enough quantities to prove these properties.

4.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

How do liquid crystal displays (LCDs) work?

Back

LCDs use the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals to display images. The liquid crystals change shape when charged to block or let light through, requiring a backlight to work.

5.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What are OLEDs and how do they differ from LCDs?

Back

OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) allow devices to be thinner and lighter as each pixel emits its own light, unlike LCDs which require a backlight. OLEDs offer better color and contrast but are more expensive.

6.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What are nanomaterials and their uses?

Back

Nanomaterials are tiny particles (1 to 100 nm) used in thin films or coatings, such as oleophobic coatings on smartphone screens that repel fingerprints, or hydrophobic materials that repel water.

7.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

What are breathable fabrics and how do they work?

Back

Breathable fabrics allow body moisture to evaporate while remaining waterproof, using a breathable membrane with microscopic holes. Examples include Gore-Tex, Permatex, and SympaTex.
