Explain why the policy of appeasement led to the outbreak of war in Europe.

Appeasement was the policy that the Allies used to deal with the aggressive actions of Hitler. The goal was to prevent another war - so Britain and France gave in to Hitler’s demands and let him get away with violating the terms of the Treaty of Versailles with no consequence. They believed that eventually, Hitler would be satisfied and stop his aggression. Little did they know, Hitler could not be satisfied and was set on world domination. If the Allies would have stopped him and took action earlier, it could have prevented the outbreak of war. Instead, they watched Hitler grow in strength and power and gain more territory, including the Invasion of Poland, which was the final straw for the Allies.

How do the events of the interwar period give rise to WWII?

Great Depression - Economic Collapse that would send the globe into worldwide depression. This left many people unemployed, starving, and hopeless. Governments couldn’t provide aid or solutions, which caused people to turn to radical ideas and people. Totalitarian Leaders (refer to Interwar Period Notes) Rise of Stalin - First major communist regime to rise to power. Chanced scope of world and diplomacy throughout the 20th century. Sparked a fear in communism, but spread with radical ideas and figures as well. Rise of Mussolini - Fascist leader in Italy. Took control of the Italian Government and solidified his power through censorship, secret police, and sweeping reforms. Nationalism was a big part of his rise to power - using the slogan Make Italy Great Again. Rise of Hitler - Nazi dictator of Germany. Took control of the German government and used similar tactics to Mussolini. Germans were facing economic problems during the 1920s due to the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Many Germans were angry and resentful towards the Allies, and the Great Depression made things worse for Germans. Hitler took advantage of this and delivered on promises to bring greatness back to Germany, which made the German people trust him.

How did the effects of WWI cause WWII?

Treaty of Versailles - the treaty that ended WWI - it punished Germany harshly including losing land, war payments, and the loss of the military. Left Germany is shambles and left the German people angry and resentful. Hitler will take advantage of this and rise to power, creating unity amongst himself and Germans in their hatred for the Treaty of Versailles and the Allies. When Hitler rises to power, he violates the treaty by building up his military, stopping war payments, and ultimately taking back land lost after WWI - leads to the inevitable Invasion of Poland which marked the start of WWII in Europe.

What were at least 5 effects of WWII? (Don’t forget to explain WHY)

Loss of population - 60 million people died during WWII. This will impact population patterns and population groups like European Jews - 6 million died in the Holocaust. Many people were displaced because of war - cities and homes were destroyed. The USA and Soviet Union will rise as superpowers - this creates tensions between the two nations. The Soviet Union was a communist regime and the USA made it clear they were anti communist and pro capitalist/democratic. This will inevitably lead to the Cold War as each tried to prove they were stronger and more powerful than the other. Creation of the United Nations - still exists today. Goal is to promote international diplomacy and co-operation and to prevent global conflicts. Also promotes human rights and peace. Economic Boom - WWII brought the world out of the Great Depression and brought economic prosperity, especially to the USA. Marshall Plan and establishment of East/West Germany - plan put in place to help Europe recover. Split Germany in half and gave the Soviets control of East Germany and the Allies control of West Germany. Divided Germany for decades and would become a major setting of the Cold War. Nuclear Weapons - The US dropping the atomic bomb on Japan led to a rise in the creation and stockpiling of Nuclear Weapons - also a major part of the cold war. This led to a fear of possible nuclear attacks, which shaped foreign policy and human behavior for decades. Formation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) - still exists today. Defensive alliance between many European powers and the US. Soviets created their own alliance system known as the Warsaw Pact in response to this. The State of Israel - Israel was established as Jewish State in 1948 in response to the atrocities of the Holocaust - served as a settlement for displaced Jews and Holocaust survivors.

Cause Caused by rise in mass militaries, growth in alliances and nationalism. Official cause was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Allies (Britain, France, Russia, USA) vs. Central Powers (Germany and Austria Hungary) Course WWI experienced a stalemate because of trench warfare - led to new innovations like tanks, machine guns, chemical warfare, and airplanes in war. Russia dropped out of war due to Russian Revolution - led to establishment of Soviet Union. USA joins war later. Outcome Germany surrendered - Treaty of Versailles placed responsibility on them.

Caused by rise in totalitarian leaders and radical ideas. Axis Powers (Germany, Japan, and Italy) vs. Allies (USA, Britain, Soviet Union). Course-WWII was very fast moving - due to Blitzkreig (lightning war). New innovations include nuclear weapons. Soviet Union joined Allies after Hitler invades his country Outcome- USA joins after Pearl Harbor. Italy surrenders, followed by Germany. Japan surrenders after the dropping of the atomic bomb.
