All Eastern Bloc countries were members of the Comecon. Through this organisation Stalin made the Eastern Bloc satellite states only trade with each other and the USSR. They could not trade with the US.

The USA and the Allies felt Germany needed to rebuild its industries, to recover economically and so it could feed its people. The USSR wanted to keep Germany weak, so instead of rebuilding industries, the Soviet workers stripped the German factories of their advanced machinery and took it back to the USSR.
