Know your students (backgrounds, strengths, needs), connect lessons to students’ lives, use strategies to support language learners and students with disabilities, promote engagement, critical thinking, and problem solving, monitor understanding and adjust instruction.

TPE 2: Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning

Build a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom climate, establish clear routines, procedures, and expectations, manage student behavior with fairness and consistency, foster positive relationships and student motivation, promote student responsibility for learning.

TPE 3: Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning

Demonstrate strong content knowledge, use subject-specific pedagogy (e.g., math, science, literacy strategies), make content accessible and meaningful to all students, integrate academic language and literacy across content areas, use technology to enhance student learning.

Plan standards-based lessons using student assessment data, differentiate instruction to meet diverse needs (IEPs, 504s, ELLs), use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and culturally responsive practices, support students’ social-emotional development and language development.

Use both formative (ongoing) and summative (final) assessments, interpret results to guide instruction and support students, provide timely, constructive feedback, involve students in setting learning goals and self-assessment, use data to address equity and access.
