Enforcement Acts (Also known as Ku Klux Klan Acts)

1870 & 1871 Laws ~ made it a federal offense to deprive African Americans of their Civil Rights such as voting.

Term for white southern Democrats who returned to power after 1870 to "redeem" the South in the eyes of Congress.

The Ten Percent Plan offered amnesty, or official pardon, to southerners. Southerners had to swear allegiance to the Union and agree that slavery was illegal. New state governments could be formed once 10 percent of voters had made these pledges. Lincoln wanted to restore order quickly.

These forced African Americans to sign annual labor contracts or they could be put in prison as "vagrants." Also forbid them from being able to assemble in large groups or own weapons.

Allowed people to vote if their father or grandfather had voted before 1866 & 1867. This law disqualified African Americans because the 15th Amendment was not passed until 1870.

Hayes-Tilden Compromise (Compromise of 1877)

Settled the disputed presidency, but brought an official end to reconstruction and the leaving of Union soldiers from the South.

Became the 19th president after Grant. His presidency saw the end of Reconstruction.

These reading tests were designed to prevent African Americans from being able to vote.

An economic system where a freedman could live and farm on a plantation owner's land, but had to pay for supplies and give a share of crops to the owner, often owing more than they made.

A freedman would pay rent to use a piece of land for farming, often resulting in owing more in rent than they could make from the land.

William Edward Burghardt "W. E. B." Du Bois (1868-1963) was a leading African-American sociologist, writer, and activist. He was a founding officer of the NAACP and taught at Wilberforce University and Atlanta University.
