They recognize that persons are parts of a whole: of a community, a nation, a family, etc. They recognize that persons are means to an end. What they fail to recognize is that persons are not merely parts, but wholes in themselves, making up these wholes, and that they are not merely means to an end, for they are ends in themselves.

Persons exist for their own sake, as an end in themselves. They are never a mere instrumental means for the good of others. Persons do not exist just as a part of a whole, for they are wholes of their own, and thus are not relative totalities, like an organ is to the body. Persons are incommunicably their own and never mere specimen. Each person belongs to himself and not to any other.
