Ratios and Rates

A ratio is a comparison of two quantities that shows the relative size of one quantity to another, often expressed as 'a to b' or a:b.

A rate is a specific kind of ratio that compares two different units, such as miles per hour or cost per item.

To find an equivalent ratio, you can multiply or divide both terms of the ratio by the same non-zero number.

The ratio is 4 to 1.

To calculate the unit rate, divide the total amount by the number of units. For example, if 15 hamburgers cost $75, the unit rate is $75 ÷ 15 = $5 per hamburger.

The unit rate is $5 ÷ 4 = $1.25 per bar of soap.

You can mow 4 lawns ÷ 7 hours = approximately 0.57 lawns per hour.
