4.3 Population Ecology Flashcards

Front

Survivorship curve

Back

A graph showing the likelihood of survival at different ages within a population.

Front

Birth rate

Back

The number of births in a population over a specific period.

Front

Death rate

Back

The number of deaths in a population over a specific period.

Front

Immigration

Movement of individuals into a population.

Front

Emigration

Back

Movement of individuals out of a population.

Front

Migration

Back

Seasonal movement of individuals into and out of an area.

Front

Exponential growth

Back

Population growth that occurs when resources are unlimited; growth rate accelerates over time.

Front

Limiting factor

Back

A factor that causes population growth to slow or stop (food, space, disease, etc.).

Front

Carrying capacity

Back

The largest population size an environment can support long-term.

Front

Logistic growth

Back

Population growth that slows as it reaches carrying capacity.
