• A karyotype is a picture of all chromosomes in a somatic arranged by size, shape, and banding pattern.

• The last pair tells the person's gender.

• XX = female, XY = male

• A karyotype is also used to detect genetic disorders

How does crossing over lead to genetic variation?

• Homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material (crossing over).

• This leads to genetic variation (non-identical cells) because the genes that you got from your mom is mixed with the ones you got from your dad.
