Course Structure: How is Advanced Literature Different?

  • Writing Strategies (essays): 50%

  • Reading Comprehension Strategies (literature-based analytical quizzes, tests): 25%

  • Speaking/Listening (graded class participation, speeches): 10%

  • Word Study (vocabulary quizzes and activities): 10%

  • Classwork/Homework (rather infrequent miscellaneous assignments): 5%

4

Summer Work

  • Summer work is due on the first day of school. Any work that is turned after the first day (9/8) suffers the late penalty.

  • The summer work is worth 100 points in the reading category. The grade remains a zero until it is turned in.

  • If you have extenuating circumstances (new to the district, schedule change, etc) please see me privately to discuss the possibility of an extension.

Assignment: Getting to Know You!

  • I would like to get to know you as in three aspects: as a person, as a student, and as a reader.

  • You may choose to write a letter to me answering these or record a Flipgrid answering these. The Flipgrid will be visible to the class; the letter is private.

Getting to Know You: 3 Aspects

  • As a Person: How would you describe yourself? What are you most interested in (passions and hobbies)? What are your goals and ambitions? What makes you unique?

  • As a Student: What are your goals for this class? What skills would you like to work on? What strengths and weaknesses do  you possess as a student? How do you learn best (independently, visually, collaboratively, etc)

  • As a Reader: What type of literature do you like to read? Is there a novel, series, author, or genre that you feel strongly about? Feel free to think outside the box: you can include films, tv shows, graphic novels.

Mrs. Frank

  • As a Person: I'm an introvert and a nerd; I love reading, games (PC & board), D&D, Halloween, and my cats.

  • As an Academic: My goal is to make this class enjoyable for you and help you learn and succeed. When I was a student, I loved lectures and hated group work.

  • As a Reader: I love all types of things, but mostly fantasy (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones) and gothic horror (Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft).
