Significant Figure Rules

• Rule 1: Nonzero digits are significant

• Rule 2: Zeros between nonzero digits are significant

• Rule 3: Leftmost zeros in front of nonzero digits are not significant = placeholders

• Rule 4: Zeros at the end of a number and to the right of a decimal point are always significant

• Rule 5: Zeros to the right end of a measurement, left of a decimal point are not significant = unless a KNOWN value

Unlimited Significant Figures

• 1. The measurement is a counted value

• 2. Exactly defined quantities = systems of measurement
