Past Continuous
We use the past continuous to talk about something that was happening over a period of time in the past: I was watching TV all yesterday afternoon.

Linking words
We use linking words (and, because, but, or, when) to connect one phrase, clause or sentence with another.
We can use the linking word at the beginning or the middle of the sentence: When we arrived at the airport, there was a terrible storm.
