Characteristics of Living Things

  • Have an orderly structure

  • Produce Offspring

  • Grow and Develop

  • Adjust to Changes in the Environment

3

Have an Orderly Structure

  • All living things have cellular organization

  • Whether an organism is made up of one cell or billions of cells, all of its parts function together in an orderly living system

  • Ex. Humans: human cells make up tissues, tissues make up organs

4

Produce Offspring

  • Living things make more living things

  • Organisms don't live forever

  • For life to continue, they must replace themselves

5

Grow and Develop

  • Growth: results in an increase in the amount of living material and the formation of new structures

  • Ex.  embryos: they grow larger and organ systems are formed such as heart, eyes, and lungs

  • Development: all the changes that take place during the life of an organism

6

Adjust to Changes in the Environment

  • Environment: surroundings; includes air, water, weather, temperature, any other organism in the area, and many other factors

  • Stimulus: anything in an organisms internal or external environment that causes the organism to react

  • Response: reaction to a stimulus

  • Ex. Stimulus: it gets warmer outside throughout the day, Response: dog pants to cool off

7

Adjust to Changes in the Environment

  • Homeostasis: regulation of an organism's internal environment to maintain conditions suitable for its survival

  • Energy: ability to cause change

  • A transfer of energy is necessary to maintain homestasis

8

Poll

Do you understand the characteristics of life?

Yes

No

Some of them

9

Poll

Which characteristic(s) of life do you find most confusing?

Have an orderly structure

Produce offspring

Grow and develop

Adjust to changes in the environment

I understand all of them

10

Methods of Biology

11

Scientific Methods

  • Observe

  • Make a hypothesis

  • Collect data

  • Publish results

  • Form a theory

  • Develop new hypotheses

  • Revise theory

12

Variables

  • Independent variable: The condition in an experiment that is tested. The only factor that affects the outcome of the experiment

  • Dependent variable: Results from the change. Any changes in the dependent variable depends on changes made to the independent variable

13

The Nature of Biology

  • Quantitative information: can be quantified or made into numbers; numerical

  • Qualitative information: purely observational data; written descriptions of what is observed

14

Science and Society

  • Science can't answer all questions; some questions are not in the realm of science

  • Technology can't solve all problems; technology has many issues
