How can a number line be used to locate numbers?

Math Detectives

For the next couple of weeks, we're going to become math detectives! We will learn how to use number lines to find missing numbers, to place numbers on a number line, compare numbers, and put numbers in order from least to greatest and greatest to least.

Number Lines

Number lines show us the numbers in order. Sometimes, the number line counts by ones. Sometimes, it counts by tens. It can count any way we want it to! But the numbers are ALWAYS in order.

Numbers 0-10

Look at the number line on top. It shows us the numbers between one and ten. Use the number line to figure out the number between four and six.

What number comes between four and six on the number line?

Five!!!

Did you say five? Great job! You can tell that five is between four and six because it comes after the four and before the six on the number line.

Numbers to 100

Now let's look at the number line on the bottom. It shows the numbers from 0 to 100, but it's a little different. It only shows the tens! It skip counts. Does that mean that we can't figure out the other numbers that aren't written on the number line?

Of course not!

The numbers are still there, we just can't see them on the number line. See how each number has a little mark above it that crosses the number line? Some people call that a hash mark or a tick. It shows where the number goes. Look at both number lines and see if you can figure out how we could show the numbers between 0 and 10 on the bottom number line.

We could add really small hash marks, couldn't we? Look at the bottom number line again. Where do you think the number 65 would go?

Look closer!

We can use the tape measure as an example. If we look at the fourth tape measure, we can see all the numbers between 60 and 70. The tape measure shows the tens in red and the ones in black. We can see 65 in the middle between 60 and 70. We can also see that 64 comes before 65, and 66 comes after 65.

Number Lines Are Everywhere!

Did you know that lots of things we use every day are number lines? Just like the tape measure we just looked at, number lines are easy to find!

So when we think about finding a missing number on a number line, it doesn't have to be hard or scary. We have awesome brains that can help us be number detectives. We know that we can use clues to help us find the number we need! The clues are all of the numbers around the missing number.

As long as we know the order of the numbers, we can solve the mystery of a missing number no matter how BIG the number is!
