• Spanish priest

• Settled in East Texas

• Brought missions to East Texas

• worked out agreements with the French in Louisiana 

Fray Damian Massanet

• explored with Alonso De Leon

• came from Spain to East Texas in 1690

• Spanish were worried about the French settling in the same region 

Age of Contact Era

• French and Spain are both claiming land in Texas

• During this time French and Spain met with the Comanches and Apaches to aid in the land claims

• Mission-Presidios are created

Jose De Escandon

• South Texas 

• Came from Spain

• Settled between the Rio Grande River and Nueces River

• Military governor for Spain in Larodo, Texas

• In 1519 news headline reads:

• "PINEDA MAPS COASTLINE OF TEXAS!"

Pineda first map made

San Antonio 

• founded by Spanish colonists in 1718

• One of the major cities in Texas

• A mission: The Alamo is here

Cabeza de Vaca

• searched for the legendary city of El Dorado

• shipwrecked in Galveston

• he was a Merchant, which is a trader during these early settlment years in Texas 

Hernando De Soto

• searched for gold on behalf of Spain

• took after the passing of Coronado

• explored Texas and defeated the Caddo Indians

Key Notes

-Native Americans did not want to change their ways & religion 

-Missions brought diseases from the Spainards and French that Indians were not exposed to before. Missions also brought religion to America. Missions were landmarks to claim Texas land for the Spanish.

-Native Americans were suspicious of the Spanish Missions

-Main idea for all explorers coming from other countries to America: the 3 G's: GOD-GOLD-GLORY

-Cibola is the legend of the Seven Cities
