Comparison of quantities of same kind by division.

Comparison 

To compare two ratios ,first write them as fractions and then make them like fractions by taking LCM of the denominators .
Eg.  Compare the two ratios  4:5 and 3:4
=>4/5 , 3/4
4x4/5x4 , 3x5 /4x5
16/20 , 15/20
so, 16/20 >15/20
or, 4/5 > 3/4

Division of a quantity in a Ratio

In order to divide a quantity in a given ratio , sum  the terms of the ratio and then find each one's share of the total quantity .
Eg. Divide 450g in the ratio 5:4
Sum of the ratio terms = 5+4 =9
so, first share = 5/9 *450=250g
  second share = 4/9 * 450 =200g
