How to Make a Ten

  • Change one addend to 10 in order to solve the problem

Practice Problem 1

  • How would you rewrite 8 + 6 to make a ten?

  • Step 1: Add 2 to 8 to make it 10

  • Step 2: Subtract 2 from 6 to make it 4

  • Side note: Adding 2 to 8 and subtracting 2 from 6 evens out the problem

  • Step 3: Rewrite as 10 + 4

  • Step 4: Solve to see that 8 + 6 = 14, and 10 + 4 = 14 as well

7

Practice Problem 2

  • How can we change 9 + 6 to make a ten?

  • Step 1: Add 1 to 9 to make it 10

  • Step 2: Subtract 1 from 6 to make it 5

  • Step 3: Rewrite as 10 + 5
