Graphs and Graphing

How do scientists communicate the data they collect?

media

2

Graphs are a way to display data so it is easy to understand and so you can look for patterns

3

The main graph types we will learn about

  • Bar graph

  • Line Graph

  • Pie Graph

  • Scatter Plot

4

Multiple Select

What types of graphs are we going to learn about?

1

Bar

2

Line

3

Pie

4

Scatter Plat

5

Linear

5

X and Y axis

Here you can see the x axis and y axis labeled. These are what I mean when I say x or y axis as we move on.

media

6

The Parts of a graph. They all have most of these in common. Not all graphs have a scale or interval.

media

7

Here is a bar graph

  •  Numerical values of variables are represented by the height or length of lines or rectangles of equal width.

  • Independent Variable is along the x axis

  • Dependent variable is along the y axis

media

8

Here is a bar graph

  • We see on the y axis label that the number scale is "Number of tests per million people"

  • On the x axis are the name countries they are looking at

  • The Title is "Number of Covid-19 tests per million of people"

media

9

Here is a bar graph

  • Bar Graphs are good for comparing different groups of data as shown here.

  • Other example could be:

  • Number of different color M&Ms per bag

Multiple Choice

Which fruit had the largest quantity?

1

Apples

2

Bananas

3

Blue Berries

4

Pears

14

This is a line graph

  • A chart used to show information that changes over time.

  •  Line graphs use several points connected by straight lines.

media

15

This is a line graph

  • We can see the title is "Wild life population"

  • We are not given a scale for the y-axis so we can asum number of individuals

  • The key at the bottom tells us what each line represents

  • We can also see that this is from 2017 to and estimation of 2021 and 2022

20

This is a pie graph (or chart)

  • It is good for showing parts of a whole

  • Doesn't really have a scale to it though sometimes people do include values like the pie graph on the next slide

  • There are no x and y axis in a pie graph

media

21

This is a pie graph (or chart)

  • We see the title is "U.S. Federal Spending - Fiscal year 2015($ Billions)"

  • The "($ Billions)" we see in the title tells us the number shared in the pie graph are in Billions of dollars.

media

22

This is a pie graph (or chart)

  • Pie graphs are often over used, and people try to convey the wrong type of information in them

  • They are only good at showing percentage (%) of a whole

Multiple Choice

Do you believe the information contained in this pie graph?

1

Yes

2

No

27

This is a scatter plot

  • This type of graph shows the relationship between two sets of data

  • Good for comparing two independent or dependent variables or two linked sets of data.

  • Allows for you to see a patteren between the two sets.

  • Fore example this one shows that as height increases weight seems to also increase.

media

28

Scatter plots are usually discussed and viewed in terms of connection (or correlation) between the data set

Review: Bar Graphs

  • Good for comparing numbers with in different groupings

  • Width of bars should be the same

  • Legth/Heright should corispond to a number.

  • x and y axis should be labeled

35

Review: Line Graph

  • Good for show data that hapens over time

  • Should consist of data points and lines connecting them

  • x and y axis should be labeled

36

Review: Pie Graph

  • Good for showing parts of a whole

  • Usually experessed in percentages

  • Has no x or y axis

37

Review: Scatter Plot

  • Good for comparing two sets of data especially if you think they are corrilated

  • Good for seeing patterns

  • x and y axis should be labeled
