Place value can be thought of as how much a digit is worth in it's place in a number. For example a "3" in the ones place is just worth 3, but a "3" in the 10's place is worth 30, a "3" in the 100s place is worth 300 and a "3" in the 1000s place is worth 3000.

Place value is important! It helps us to be able to tell which numbers are bigger and which are smaller. If you are a hippopotamus feeder it makes a big difference if you need to feed 3 hippopatomi or 3,000 hippopatomi!
