¿Ser o Estar?

When you are faced with choosing between ser and estar, use DOCTOR and PLACE to help. When in doubt, think, "How you feel, where you are, always use the verb estar".

Yo soy de Chicago.

This sentence must be completed with the verb ser, since you are describing origin (where someone/something is from). 

The yo form of ser is soy

Los jugadores de la NBA son muy altos.

This sentence must be completed with the verb ser, since you are describing characteristics 

To describe "los jugadores", use the ellos form of ser; son

Mi perro está triste porque no vamos al parque.

This sentence must be completed with the verb estar, since you are explaining the dog´s emotions (he is feeling sad). 

Use the "él" form for mi perro; está

Son las 2:30 de la tarde.

This sentence must be completed with the verb ser, since you are telling time.

Except for 1 a.m. and 1 p.m., always use "son" when telling time. (1 a.m./p.m. = "Es la una")

El restaurante está en Buffalo Grove.

This sentence must be completed with the verb estar, since you are explaining the location of the restaurant

Conjugate "el restaurante" in the "él" form; está

Elena y Bonita son las hijas de Señor Beedie.

This sentence must be completed with the verb ser, since you are describing the relationship between Elena, Bonita, and Señor Beedie.

Elena and Bonita are Señor Beedie's daughters

*Bonita is his puppy daughter :)

En la clase nosotros estamos aprendiendo español

This sentence must be completed with the verb estar, since you are explaining an action in progress.
