WHAT IS A FRAGMENT??????

A fragment is an INCOMPLETE SENTENCE.

So, a fragment will have a subject or a predicate, but not both!

  • The slide.

  • The fifth graders.

  • Is happy we are fixing the sentences!

  • Worth a thousand words!

If the "sentence" makes you go "??????," it's probably a fragment.

Because it doesn't make sense!

  • The slide. →  The slide has a picture of Santa on it.

  • The fifth graders. →  The fifth graders are probably wondering why.

  • Is happy we are fixing the sentences! →  Santa is happy we are fixing the sentences!

  • And, as we all know...

  • Worth a thousand words. →  A picture is worth a thousand words!

So what is a run-on??

  • A run-on is two sentences that run together!

  • Sometimes there may be a comma separating the sentences, but it's still wrong without a FANBOYS word! 

  • (It's called a comma splice when two sentences are separated only by a comma.)
