Vocabulary Overview
Quantitative Data: Data that can be defined numerically through counting or measuring
Categorical Data: Data that describes attributes or objects but does not contain numbers
NOTE: Values like zipcodes that are numbers but CANNOT be counted or measured are CATEGORICAL
3
PRACTICE TIME!
Tell me if the following are categorical or quantitative!
4
Multiple Choice
The different colors of crayons found in a crayola crayon box
categorical
Quantitative
5
The different colors of crayons found in a crayola crayon box
This is an example of categorical data, as colors can be grouped into categories, but cannot be represented numerically.
6
Multiple Choice
The temperature outside
categorical
quantitative
7
The Temperature Outside
Is an example of QUANTITATIVE data! Temperature is described by a numberical value (75 degrees) and can be MEASURED!
8
Fill in the Blank
Type answer...
9
The number of hot dogs Joey Chestnut ate at the hot dog eating contest is an example of....
Quantative data! The key word here is NUMBER. If the number of something is being measured, it is always quantitative.
10
Multiple Select
Which of the following are examples of categorical data? (Select all that apply)
The leaves are brown
The tree is 10m tall
There are 20 branches
The bark is thick
The roots are deep
11
So which were categorical?
The leaves are brown (colors are always categorical)
The bark is thick (adjectives are categorical)
The roots are deep (if they told us HOW deep it would be quantitative. But they dont, so its categorical)
12
Multiple Select
Which of the following are quantitative data
The number of baseballs
The distance to center field
The color of the infield
The name of the home team
The seat capacity at the stadium
13
So which were quantitative?
The NUMBER of baseballs (numbers are always quantitative)
The DISTANCE to center field (distance is measurable, making it quantitative)
The SEAT CAPACITY of the stadium (how many people can sit at the stadium? Sounds like that will be a number!)
14
Poll

15
Identifying the individual
The individual is defined as the object being described by the data.
In the example "Baseball players are ranked from best to worst by their averages" The individual is the baseball players average.
In the example "John is comparing the price of skateboards at the shop" The individual is the price of the skateboards.
16
Multiple Choice
"Teachers must meet with students who miss at least 3 classes" What is the individual
The teacher
The student
The classes
17
"Teachers must meet with students who miss at least 3 classes" What is the individual
The individual in this case is the student. As the data describes the students who miss at least 3 classes.
18
Open Ended
A parking control officer records the manufacturer of every 5th car in the college parking lot in order to guess the most common manufacturer. What is the individual?
19
A parking control officer records the manufacturer of every 5th car in the college parking lot in order to guess the most common manufacturer.
The individuals are the cars in the parking lot. As the manufacturer of those cars is the data that is being collected.
20
Fill in the Blank
Type answer...
21
A biologist wants to estimate the average height of a plant that is given a new plant food.
The individual is the plant that is given new food
The height of the plant is what is being measured.
22
Multiple Select
A doctor wants to see if a new treatment for cancer extends the life expectancy of a patient versus the old treatment. She gives one group of 25 cancer patients the new treatment and another group of 25
25 the old treatment. Identify the individuals (there's more than one)
The doctor
The patients getting the new treatment
The patients getting the old treatment
The life expectancy of the patient
23
A doctor wants to see if a new treatment for cancer extends the life expectancy of a patient versus the old treatment. She gives one group of 25 cancer patients the new treatment and another group of 25 the old treatment.
Both the group given the new treatment and the group given the old treatment are individuals
The life expectancy is the variable being determined, but is not the OBJECT that is being described by that data.
