Summary: Chapter Seventeen
Marco gives Raquel a stuffed toy panda for Valentine’s Day. Raquel feels flattered that he gave her the gift, but the panda frightens her. Mrs. Pruitt starts telling the class about the battle at the Alamo. Marco decides to use what Mrs. Pruitt says to help him in the play.

Raquel asks Mrs. Pruitt why she doesn’t tell the truth about Texas and the Alamo. Raquel feels nervous talking back to a teacher, but she is so angry that she keeps talking about how the Americans had come to Texas illegally and how history books have forgotten about the Mexicans at the Alamo. After class, she argues with Marco because he did not speak up and defend her in class.

Mrs. Frymire is leading a play rehearsal. Agatha cannot remember her lines. Marco thinks about Raquel. Billy Ray laughs at Izzy when Izzy says his lines. Izzy calls Billy Ray a “buck-toothed, bald-headed orangutan” again. The boys start shouting at each other. Mrs. Frymire calls an end to rehearsals. Mr. Watts leads Marco and Izzy out of the auditorium.
