Chapter 6 review
Trino listens to the rest of the poetry reading. After it ends, he speaks with Jimmy, Albert, and Hector, and the boys get something to eat from the Book Lady’s buffet. As they talk, Trino realizes he knows the other boys from school. Lisana joins the boys after getting her copy of Montoya’s book signed, and Trino cannot understand why she is so excited about the encouraging words Montoya wrote to her.

Once he has eaten, Trino decides to leave but winds up bumping into Montoya in one of the bookstore’s back rooms. Trino expresses his disdain for books, and Montoya asks Trino whether he really knows how to read. Montoya tells Trino that when you know how to read with true understanding, you can learn to think for yourself and protect yourself from people who might take advantage of you. As Trino struggles with this idea, Montoya gives Trino his own copy of his book and signs it.
