What is Volleyball?

  • Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net.

  • Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's count under organized rules.

What are the basic rules of volleyball

  • 6 players on a team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row

  • Players may not hit the ball twice in succession (a block is not considered a hit).

  • Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on a serve.

  • A ball hitting a boundary line is "in."

4

basic volleyball rules cont.

  • A ball is "out" if it hits an antennae, the floor completely outside the court, any of the net or cables outside the antennae, the referee stand or pole, or the ceiling above an non-playable area.

  • It is legal to contact the ball with any body part of a players body.

  • It is illegal to catch, hold, or throw the ball.

  • After the serve, front row players may switch positions on the net and back row players can switch positions on the court.

5

What are the different positions on the court?

  • Setter

  • Front row hitters (outside hitter, right side hitter, and middle hitter)

  • Back row players (libero, defensive specialist)

  • Serving specialist

6

Setter

  • This position is essentially the quarterback or point guard of the team.

  • They aim to receive the second touch, setting it for an attaching player (hitter).

  • A setter can play either the front row or back row, they need to be ready to block, dig and receive a serve on defense.

Libero

  • Liberos only play in the back row and often receive the attack or serve.

  • Players with good passing and defensive skills have the most success at this position.

Defensive specialist

  • Defensive specialist come in to replace a player who may not have the right skills for the back row.

  • Unlike the libero, they must make a substitution with the referees.

  • A defensive specialist can play any spot on the court and play in the front row if needed.

10

Serving

  • The serving specialist is brought in solely to serve.

  • This player usually has a particularly difficult serve to return, and they'll be used to replace players that have a less difficult serve.
