2

Positive Ions

  • Atoms LOSE electrons

  • Name stays the same, add the word "ion" to the end

  • ALL metals

  • Sometimes hydrogen

3

Negative Ions

  • Atoms GAIN (steal) electrons

  • Non-metals

  • Drop the end of the name and add "-ide"

4

Negative Ions

Copy these down onto your chemistry squad

Writing Ion formulas

  • Write the element symbol

  • Look up or figure out the charge and write it down

  • Usually written as a superscript but we're not going to worry about that here - just put a space between the symbol and the charge

  • example: Lithium ion Li +1

  • example bromide Br -1

19

Reminder about symbols

  • first letter MUST be capitalized

  • If there is a second letter, it is NEVER capitalized

  • You must give either + or -

  • You must give the number of the charge

  • Leave a space between the symbol and the charge - that's just to make it easier for me to see
