Gustar is a different sort of verb...

  • While some verbs conjugate based on who is doing something (Yo canto, tu cantas, etc.)...

  • Gustar decided to be a little different.

  •  You do not conjugate gustar based on the person who likes something (that would be too easy).

  • Instead, you conjugate based on the thing that they like.

  • Sound weird? Let's check it out.

3

Gustar: to like

  • Me gusta(n) – I like

  • Te gusta(n) – You like (informal)

  • Le gusta(n) – You like (formal)/ he/she likes

  • Nos gusta(n) – We like

  • Les gusta(n) – You all like/They like

Are you talking about liking a thing? A noun? These will determine the form of gustar.

  • Do you like something that is understood as a singular thing? --> tv, pizza, money

  • Gustar becomes gusta:

  • Me gusta la tv.

  • Te gusta la pizza.

  • Le gusta el dinero.

6

But wait! Do you like something that is understood as a plural thing?

  • For example: animals, video games, books

  • Gustar becomes gustan

  • Me gustan los animales.

  • Te gustan los videojuegos.

  • Le gustan los libros.

The next big thing to remember is that when a verb follows gustar, it stays in the infinitive form!

  • Infinitives = most basic form of the verb

  • In English, we add "to" in front of it (to walk, to skate, to eat). We see it's an infinitive AT THE BEGINNING with "to."

  • In Spanish, the infinitive get's marked AT THE END with -ar, -er, or -ir (caminar, patinar, comer)

  • So, what does this look like in action???

9

Pronoun + gustar + infinitive

  • Me gusta cantar.

  • Te gusta bailar.

  • Le gusta ver la tele.

  • Nos gusta patinar.

  • Les gusta cocinar.
