First, a note about the definite article "the"

le, la, l', les

  1. Use "the" when you are being specific, as in "I want the croissant that is on the table"​. Je veux le croissant qui est sur la table.​

  2. Use "the" when you are stating a like or dislike, as in "I like pizza, but I hate hamburgers." J'aime la pizza, mais je déteste les hamburgers.​

​Le Partitif (the partitive article)

1. Use the partitive when you want to say "some" or "any". Keep in mind that in English we often omit these words, but in French they must be used. (ex. Do you have some bananas? Do you have any bananas? Do you have bananas? all 3 = Tu as des bananes?)

2. After ne...pas, du/de la/de l'/des become de/d'​. (ex. Je n'ai pas de bananes. = I don't have any bananas. I don't have some bananas. I don't have bananas.)
