Strategies

Practice makes perfect

Examine question and highlight verbs

Get your vocabulary down and define when necessary

For higher level thinking questions, claim + evidence + reason

Even if you don't know your stuff, show your thinking

Don't waste time using words that don't answer the question

3

Open Ended

Identify three MACROMOLECULES that are components in plasma membrane in eukaryotic cell.

4

Open Ended

Discuss structure and function of each.

5

Question image

Interpret and identify this structure.

6

What am I looking for?

PHOSPHOLIPIDS--hydrophilic phosphorous containing head, hydrophobic fatty acid tail--selectively permeable, barrier, signals, fluidity

CHOLESTEROL-- ring structure, embedded in bilayer--moderates fluidity, stabilizes membrane

PROTEINS-- polypeptides/amino acids--transport, enzyme, cell junction

Fluid Mosaic Model- important representation of cell membrane as being composed of these macromolecules that all play a function. For example, cholesterol is embedded to help regulate temperature and rigidity of phospholipids. It acts as a buffer to prevent the phospholipids to responding to cold or hot in an extreme way (keeps it fluid).
