Once upon a time in Southside Richmond...

there lived a set of very special quadruplets....

4

Braydynn...

He was the oldest of the quadruplets (by three minutes).

These four siblings love to learn.

And they also love to help others learn. So, for this lesson, they are going to teach you about the four basic representations (models) of multiplication!

9

Model #1: Repeated Addition

The most basic definition of multiplication is REPEATED ADDITION, adding the same number of items over and over again.

EXAMPLES:

7+7+7=21 (is the same as 7x3=21)

9+9+9+9=36 (is the same as 9x4=36)

8+8=16 (is the same as 8x2=16)

Model #2: Set Model

A set model represents multiplication as groups of items with the same number of items in each individual group.

EXAMPLES:

Three boxes of crayons with ten crayons in each pack (3x10)

Seven bags of socks with eight socks in each bag (7x8)

Nine plates with two slices of pizza on each plate (9x2)

Model #3: Array Model

An array model is similar to the set model because it shows a multiplication problem as groups of items. But this model is different from the set model because is arranges those items into rows (lines going left to right) and columns (lines going up and down).

EXAMPLES:

There were four rows of six teddy bears on the display at the toy store. (4x6)

The people running the meeting set up eight rows of nine chairs. (8x9)

Model #4: Number Line

The number line model shows a multiplication problem as a line split into segments of equal length. This model starts at ZERO and requires the user to use their ability to skip count in order to reach the "finish line" or the "end point".
