Comparing numbers

2
Comparing numbers is a skill you will need almost every day.
It is really important when you are using money to buy something.
3
You have to understand place value in order to compare numbers.
4
In 3rd grade you have to be able to compare numbers in the thousands.
Let's look at the number 4,357. The 4 is in the thousands place, the 3 is in the hundreds place, the 5 is in the tens place, and the 7 is in the ones place.
5
Let's look at that number again.
4,357
The value of the 4 is 4000, the value of the 3 is 300, the value of the 5 is 50 and the value of the 7 is 7.
6
In the number 4,453 the value of the first 4 is 4000, the value of the second 4 is 400, the value of the 5 is 50 and the value of the 3 is 3.
7
Now look at both of the numbers together.
4,357
4,453
I want to know which one is greater. First I look at the 1000's place. They are the same. Then I look at the 100's place and I see that one number has a 4 and one has a 3. Since 400 is greater than 300, I know that 4,453 is greater than 4,357.
