Squeaky is the protagonist of the story.
Squeaky takes care of her brother Raymond.
She is tough and unafraid of confrontation.
She is skinny and has a squeaky voice, the source of her nickname. She is a very fast runner.
The big kids call her 'Mercury' cause she is the swiftest (fastest) thing in the neighbouhood.

Raymond's father can easily beat her in running without exerting any effort.
Her father is beating her with his hands in his pockets and whistling.
That's private information. No one knew that her father can easily beat her.

Gretchen is Squeaky's rival.
