Parietal versus visceral - think about the organs in each cavity being double bagged

  • Parietal serous membrane is the outer baggy

  • Visceral serous membrane is the inner baggy

  • This provides pressure control that is hugely important, especially in maintaining the lungs -- punctured lung means a punctured pleural sac which means equalized pressure with the outside which means a collapsed lung
