Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition

2

Weathering

  • The breaking down of landforms, rocks, and minerals

  • Can be physical , chemical, or biological

3

Physical Weathering

  • Water getting into cracks, freezing, and breaking it apart.

  • A river pounding against a caynon wall and wearing it down.

  • Wind blasting sand at rocks and carving out an arch.

  • Glaciers scraping rocks and making them smaller.

  • Rocks being made smoother by water in a river.

4

Chemical Weathering

  • Acid rain.

  • Rust,

5

Biological Weathering

  • A tree growing out of a rock and splitting it

6

Erosion

  • The movement of sediment or soil from one place to another

  • Water, wind, and ice all cause erosion

7

Water Erosion

  • A river carries sediments down stream

  • Rain washes away soil

  • A mudslide flowing down a steep hill

  • Flood waters moving soil from one location to another

Slide image

8

Wind Erosion

  • Wind picks up particles of sand and carries it away

  • Wind blowing sand across the beach

Slide image

9

Ice Erosion

  • Glaciers carry rocks, soil, and sediments.

  • As the glaciers slowly move, it carries the sediments along with it.

  • Avalanches carry the sediments along with the snow down the mountainside.

10

Deposition

  • When particles that have been carried away by ice wind or snow are deposited, or dropped, in another location.

  • Landforms like sand dunes, moraines, and deltas are created by deposition

11

Water Deposition

  • Layers of sediments form at the bottom of the ocean.

  • Waves drop sand on the beach.

  • Rivers slow down by the mouth and deposits the sediments forming deltas.

Slide image

12

Wind Deposition

  • Sand dunes are formed when the wind drops the sand in a new location.

Slide image

13

Glacial Deposits

  • Moraines are formed when a glacier melts and the sediments that it had been carrying get dropped in a new place.
