• When we study geography, we ask questions about places

• Maps are a great way for geographers to show what they know about a certain area- whether it be the whole world or a tiny county

• The map is the WHERE of geography and it allows us to draw conclusions, make connections, and ask more questions!

Map Types

• Cartographers use maps to display information. There are different maps that work for different types of information.

• Types of maps:

• Political

• Physical

• Special Purpose

Political maps show government divisions of land areas. For example, this world map shows country divisions.

Physical maps show the physical features of the land. For example: mountains and rivers.

Special Purpose Maps show data for a specific category. This map shows areas of the world that are at risk for malaria and areas that are not at risk.
