Matter

MATTER is anything that has MASS and takes up space (VOLUME).

All MATTER can be sorted into two catagories.

SUBSTANCE or MIXTURE

SUBSTANCES are

• Made of one type of ATOM or MOLECULE all the way through

• SUBSTANCES are the SAME all the way through

• Have testable PROPERTIES (characteristics that do not change so they help identify different SUBSTANCES)

MIXTURES are

• Made of two or more SUBSTANCES mixed together

• MIXTURES are not the same all the way through (samples taken from the top and bottom of a MIXTURE may be different)

• MIXTURES CANNOT be identified using PROPERTIES

Everything that has MASS and VOLUME can be sorted into one of two catagories.
