Algebra Lesson 3-1
Graphing Linear Functions

2
To determine if an equation is linear:
look for oddities - see anything abnormal?
Try to write the equation in STANDARD FORM.
3
Fill in the Blanks
Determine in the equation x = y - 5 is linear. If it is, write it in standard form.
Type answer...
4
Multiple Select
Select all of the equations below that are linear and can be written in the form Ax + By = C.
6x2 = y
-4y + 2 + 6 = 2 - x
32x − 31y = 2
4xy + 5y = 13
-2x - 3 = y
5
To find the intercepts of a table or graph:
Table: the y-intercept is where x=0 and the x-intercept is where y=0
Graph: the y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y-axis, the x-intercept is where the graph crosses the x-axis
6
Open Ended
Go to page 147 in your book. Find the x- and y-intercepts of #5 and describe what they mean below.
7
Open Ended
On that same page, find the x- and y-interecepts of #6 and describe what they mean below:
8
To graph you can make a table or find the intercepts:
Table: Make a T table. Choose your x values and plug them into the equation to find the y values. Those are your points. Graph and connect.
Intercepts: Write it twice! Make x=0 once and solve for y and then make y=0 on the other and solve for x. Plot the two intercepts and connect.
9
Multiple Select
Choose all of the correct pairs below that would go in the table for the function y = 2x - 1
(-1,-3)
(0,1)
(0,-1)
(2,3)
(1,3)
10
Multiple Choice
What would be the easiest way to graph 2x - 5y = 1?
osmosis
intercepts
table
using slope-intercept form
11
Fill in the Blanks
What are the x- and y-intercepts of the equation 2x - 5y = 1?
Type answer...
12
Domain and range:
Domian: how far left and right is the function going? ( ) for infinities, [ ] for numbers. Smallest number on the left.
Range: what's the lowest it'll go and the highest?
13
Open Ended
State the domain and range
14
Fill in the Blanks
The equation 15x + 30y = 180 represents the number of children x and adults y who can attend the rodeo for $180. Use the x- and y-intercepts to graph the equation on your graph paper and then describe what the intercepts mean below.
Type answer...
