Indefinite article

The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known.

Indefinite article 'an'

We use ''an'' before the sound of a vowel.

Example: an Apple , An umbrella

We use ''a'' before the sound of a consonant.

example: a cat, a girl , a Unicorn

Definite Article

The definite article (the) is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader. 

Definite Article 'the'

The  is used before singular and plural nouns when the noun is specific or particular. 

example: "The dog that bit me ran away." Here, we're talking about a specific dog, the dog that bit me.
