Vocab

  • Base - When a number is raised to a power, the number that is used as a factor is the base

  • Exponent - The number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor

  • Power - A number produced by raising a base to an exponent

6

Example:

  • 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3

  • Base 3

  • Exponent 5

  • Written as

     353^5

  • Read three to the power of five

7

Special exponents

  • an exponent of 2 is called squared

     727^2  is said seven squared

  • an exponent of 3 is called cubed                                                                    838^3  is said eight cubed

8

More vocab

  • Exponential form is writing the amount using exponents such as

     454^5

  • Expanded form is writing the amount as multiplication such as 4x4x4x4x4

  • Typing on a computer use the ^ (called a carrot) to symbolize an exponent - hold shift and press 6 to get the carrot

  • 4^5 is  454^5

9

Fill in the Blanks

How is 8x8x8x8x8x8 written in exponent form?

Type answer...

10

Fill in the Blanks

What is the expanded form of

 939^3  ?

Type answer...

11

Lets look at some patterns:

  •  545^4  = 5x5x5x5 = 625

  •  535^3  = 5x5x5 = 125

  •  525^2  = 5x5 = 25

  •  515^1  = 5

  • Each time the exponent gets smaller by 1 the answer is divided by the base (5 in this case)

  • What would  505^0  be?

  • Any number to the power of 0 is 1.

    What about  5−15^{-1}  ?

12

Fill in the Blanks

What is

 80?8^0?

Type answer...

13

Negative exponents create fractions

  •  5−2=15x5=1255^{-2}=\frac{1}{5x5}=\frac{1}{25}

  •  8−4=184=140968^{-4}=\frac{1}{8^4}=\frac{1}{4096}
