WHEN DO WE USE THE SIMPLE PAST?

We use the Simple Past tense when the action is COMPLETED.

We refer to PAST TIMES AND SITUATIONS.

Notice TIME EXPRESSIONS such as:

YESTERDAY, LAST NIGHT, SOME TIME AGO, IN 2016, YESTERDAY AT 6 P.M.

SIMPLE PAST OF THE VERB TO BE

  • When I WAS a child, I had many dolls.

  • When you WERE a child, you WERE terrible.

  • There are 2 different forms: WAS ( 1st - 3rd person singular) and WERE (2nd person singular + all plural)

ASKING QUESTIONS - TO BE

  • WAS he happy after the party?

  • WERE you terrible as a child?

NEGATIVE FORM - TO BE

  • He WASN'T happy after the party.

  • You WEREN'T terrible as a child.

Formation

  • Regular verbs: INFINITIVE + -ED

  • Irregular verbs: see verb pattern: go - WENT - gone

  • example: Yesterday I WORKED all day

  • example: Last night I SAW an exciting film

ASKING QUESTIONS

  • DID you WORK all day yesterday?

  • DID you SEE an exciting movie last night?

  • REMEMBER! Always use DID + Subject + INFINITIVE for a question

NEGATIVE FORM

  • I DIDN'T WORK all day yesterday

  • I DIDN' SEE an exciting movie last night

  • REMEMBER! Always use Subject + DIDN'T + INFINITIVE for a negative form
