Adding and Subtracting with integers can get interesting.

Some say, "Subtraction doesn't exist."

5

Subtraction can be rewritten by adding a negative number

  • 5 - 3 can be rewritten as 5 + (-3)

  • Both will equal the same thing, 2.

Here are a couple more examples.

  • 17 - 7 = 10

  • This can also be written as 17 + (-7) and it also equals 10.

  • 5 - 6 = -1

  • This can also be written as 5 + (-6) and it also equals -1

Multiple Choice

What is another way to write 11 - 6 using addition to get the same answer?

1

6 - 11

2

11 + (-6)

3

11 + 6

4

(-11) - (-6)

8

Absolute Value

Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero (0) on the number line.

This can also be thought of as the positive version of any number.

9

Absolute Value Notation.

the notation for absolute value is represented by two straight lines on either side of the number.
