What are rows and columns?

• Rows go side to side

• Columns go up and down

In order to calculate the area of a shape, you multiply the length times the width.

5x2 - 10 square inches

You can count how many square units are in each row and multiply it by how many units are in each column.

When writing the area of a shape, we must write "square" in front of the unit of measurement.

For example:

5 x 5 = 25 square cm

Here's another example:

3 x 3 = 9 square units
