Seismic Waves

• Seismic waves are the waves that travel within Earth due to rocks breaking apart or an explosion at the surface.

Seismic Waves - Body & Surface

• Body Waves are the faster seismic waves, and they travel through Earth's interior.

• Two types of body waves: P-waves & S-waves.

• Be sure and watch the animations to understand each type better.

Surface Waves

• Surface waves are seismic waves that travel only through Earth's crust.

• They travel slower than body waves, but they're responsible for almost all of the damage that occurs from an earthquake.

• 2 types of surface waves - Love waves and Rayleigh waves.
