Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators

  • First you make the denominators the same. To do this you need to find the least common multiple for the denominators. Multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number to make the fractions equivalent while having the same value for the denominator.

  • Add the numerators together, the denominator will stay the same.

Subtracting Fractions

  • If the denominators are the same you can subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator.

  • If the denominators are different you must find a common denominator and then subtract the numerator. The denominator will be common denominator.
