Subtraction

  • Subtraction is a math operation that we use to find the difference between two numbers.

  • When we subtract, we are removing one number from the other.

3

Subtraction Strategies

  • When we are subtracting two numbers, we should always begin by estimating the difference.

  • It is important to estimate first so that we can determine if our solution is reasonable.

4

How do we estimate?

To estimate, we round both numbers. We should round them to their greatest place value, so we get nice "friendly" numbers to work with.

5

Subtraction Strategies

When you are subtracting, it is very important to write the problem vertically and to line up the place values in each number. You can use grid paper to help do this.
