What is a regulation?
A regulation is a rule or law made by an authority, in this case it is made by two parties. The Government and the health and safety executive (HSE).

They are here to keep everyone safe, to give guidance and support to employers and employees so they all work to a safe manner. They are also in place to help take legal action against anyone that has breached them to face court or jail term.

Health and safety at work act 1974 (HASAWA)
This is the main health and safety law, known as the umbrella as it contains other acts underneath it. It is also know as the enabling act which means it allows for any new acts or changes to other acts to be added. This act places the responsiblity onto the employers and employees to maintain a safe working environment.

Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH)
This regulation covers the safe use and storage of substances that could be dangerous or hazardous to health. The symbols on the right are on each item allowing the user to easily identify the potential risks.

Construction Design Management (CDM)
The CDM regulations focus their attention on the effective planning and management of construction projects from build to demolition. This primarily focuses on welfare and facilities making sure all staff have availability to basics such as washrooms, toilets with hot water, canteens and clean drinking water.

Provision and use of work equipment regulations (PUWER)
This regulation covers power tools mainly, which have been provided for you by your employer. It makes sure that any tool provided is actually fit for the job and has been chosen specifically for the task. If the tool is not suitable for the work the employer must change it. You wouldn't sand a wall with a steamer.

This regulation covers the provision and use of PPE in the workplace, it makes sure that employers give the correct PPE to employees and replace it when broken. Employees must take care of PPE under these regulations and wear it correctly at all times.

Work at height regulations (WAHR)
This regulation covers work from height, if work from height cannot be avoided it must work alongside these regulations. Risk assessments must be made and followed and all staff must be trained and competent to work at height. It looks at how long the work will take place and what conditions they will take place in. Work at height is classed as any height which could cause damage or harm.
